To my grandfather–

If there were a way, like recycling machines might,

to procure a dollar, quarter, or even a dime

for every fact, figure, or history we write

into these gifts, these marvelous minds,

then I’d know my partner, my soonest friend

who is no less the kindest of kin;

because, no doubt, should we pool

we would, about, have the correct tools

to cash in a fortune, to earn our right dues

as you are to me as I am for you;

as you are a king in your mansion of mind,

I’ve never searched far for a genius to find

since you taught me quite early, of law and man,

that knowledge buys freedom, though some books pretend

and some facts can lie, and yet others bend,

though the basis is love, the right place to stand.
